Urso Forte is used to treat primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a chronic liver disease, and to dissolve radiolucent cholesterol gallstones in patients who decline surgery or have a non-functioning gallbladder.
The active ingredient ursodeoxycholic acid works by decreasing cholesterol secretion into bile, reducing the cholesterol saturation of bile, and promoting bile flow. This helps protect liver cells and can dissolve cholesterol-based gallstones over time.
Urso Forte is typically taken with food. Patients should have regular liver function tests during treatment. It should not be used for pigmented (calcium bilirubinate) gallstones. Common side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal discomfort. Patients with certain liver conditions or bile duct blockages should not use this medication.
