Uvadex is used to treat moderate to severe psoriasis, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (mycosis fungoides type), and vitiligo. It is administered as part of PUVA (psoralen plus ultraviolet A) therapy, where the medication is given before controlled UVA light exposure.

Methoxsalen, the active ingredient, is a furocoumarin compound that acts as a photosensitizing agent. When activated by UVA light, it intercalates with DNA and forms cross-links, inhibiting DNA synthesis and cell division. This reduces rapid proliferation of skin cells and also modulates local immune responses in the skin.

Patients must avoid sunlight and wear UVA-blocking sunglasses for 24 hours after taking this medication due to extreme photosensitivity. PUVA therapy is associated with increased risk of skin cancer and cataracts with long-term use. Treatment should only be administered by healthcare professionals trained in PUVA therapy. Not recommended during pregnancy; may interact with other photosensitizing drugs.
