Post-exposure prophylaxis of varicella (chickenpox) in high-risk individuals including immunocompromised patients, pregnant women, newborns whose mothers had varicella around delivery, and premature infants exposed to the virus.
Varizig contains varicella-zoster immune globulin (VZIG), which provides passive immunity by supplying antibodies against the varicella-zoster virus. These pre-formed antibodies help neutralize the virus and reduce the severity of infection when given shortly after exposure.
Varizig is administered by intramuscular injection and should be given as soon as possible after exposure, ideally within 10 days. It is not a substitute for varicella vaccination in those who can receive it. This product is derived from human plasma and carries potential risks associated with blood-derived products.
