Velsipity is FDA-approved for the treatment of moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis in adult patients who have had an inadequate response or intolerance to conventional therapy or biologic medications.
Velsipity is a sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) receptor modulator that selectively binds to S1P receptor subtypes 1, 4, and 5. By activating these receptors, it causes lymphocytes to be sequestered in lymphoid tissues, preventing their circulation to the intestinal lining where they would contribute to inflammation.
Velsipity is taken orally once daily. Before starting treatment, patients should have baseline cardiovascular assessments including ECG and liver function tests. Common side effects may include headache, elevated liver enzymes, and dizziness. Due to its mechanism, it may increase the risk of infections and should not be used during pregnancy. Patients should be monitored for signs of bradycardia and macular edema during treatment.
