Vemlidy is indicated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in adults and pediatric patients aged 12 years and older with compensated liver disease.
Vemlidy contains tenofovir alafenamide, a prodrug that is converted intracellularly to tenofovir diphosphate. This active metabolite inhibits HBV reverse transcriptase, blocking viral replication by incorporating into the viral DNA and causing chain termination.
Vemlidy may cause serious side effects including lactic acidosis, severe hepatomegaly with steatosis, and acute exacerbation of hepatitis after discontinuation. It is not a cure for HBV and does not prevent transmission to others. Patients should have their kidney function monitored during treatment. Common side effects may include headache, stomach pain, fatigue, and nausea.
