Ventavis is indicated for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (WHO Group 1) to improve exercise capacity, symptoms, and hemodynamics in adults with NYHA Class III or IV symptoms.

Ventavis is a synthetic prostacyclin analogue that mimics the action of naturally occurring prostacyclin. It causes vasodilation of pulmonary arteries, inhibits platelet aggregation, and reduces pulmonary vascular resistance, allowing improved blood flow through the lungs.

Ventavis is administered via inhalation using a specialized nebulizer system, typically 6-9 times daily. Patients should be counseled about potential side effects including headache, flushing, jaw pain, and cough. Syncope can occur, particularly at the start of therapy. Ventavis should not be used during pregnancy and requires careful handling as it may cause bronchospasm in susceptible individuals.
