Vetmedin is indicated for the treatment of congestive heart failure in dogs caused by dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) or myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). It may also be used in dogs with preclinical mitral valve disease to delay the onset of heart failure symptoms.

Vetmedin contains pimobendan, a phosphodiesterase III inhibitor with calcium-sensitizing properties. This dual mechanism increases the force of heart muscle contractions (positive inotropy) while also dilating blood vessels (vasodilation), improving overall cardiac efficiency and reducing the heart's workload.

Vetmedin should be given on an empty stomach, typically twice daily as directed by a veterinarian. It is not for use in humans or cats without veterinary supervision. Common side effects may include reduced appetite, lethargy, or gastrointestinal upset. Regular cardiac monitoring and veterinary check-ups are essential while on this medication.
