Vfend is used to treat serious fungal infections including invasive aspergillosis (commonly affecting the lungs), infections caused by Scedosporium and Fusarium species, and other serious fungal infections in patients who cannot use alternative treatments.
Vfend contains voriconazole, which works by inhibiting an enzyme called lanosterol 14α-demethylase. This blocks ergosterol production, a critical component of fungal cell membranes, ultimately damaging and killing the fungal cells.
Vfend requires regular monitoring of liver function and blood levels due to potential serious side effects including liver damage and neurological symptoms. It can cause significant vision disturbances (including blurred vision and light sensitivity), and patients should avoid driving at night. The medication has many drug interactions and is generally contraindicated during pregnancy. Dose adjustments are often necessary and should only be done under healthcare provider guidance.
