Viberzi is FDA-approved for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) in adult patients. It is specifically indicated for long-term management of this condition.

Viberzi contains eluxadoline, a mixed mu-opioid receptor agonist and delta-opioid receptor antagonist. It acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing intestinal secretions and motility while modulating pain responses without significant systemic absorption.

Viberzi is contraindicated in patients without a gallbladder (cholecystectomy) due to increased risk of serious pancreas (pancreatitis) and bile duct (sphincter of Oddi) problems. Alcohol use should be avoided during treatment. Common side effects include constipation, nausea, and abdominal pain. Patients should seek immediate medical attention for symptoms of pancreatitis or sphincter of Oddi spasm such as severe abdominal pain radiating to the back, with or without nausea and vomiting.
