Vigafyde is used for the treatment of infantile spasms (West syndrome) in infants and children, and as adjunctive (add-on) therapy for adults with refractory complex partial seizures who have not responded sufficiently to other antiepileptic medications.

Vigafyde contains vigabatrin, which acts as an irreversible inhibitor of GABA transaminase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). By inhibiting this enzyme, Vigafyde increases GABA levels in the brain, producing an anticonvulsant effect that helps reduce seizure activity.

Vigafyde carries a black box warning for the risk of permanent vision loss, including peripheral visual field defects. Regular ophthalmologic examinations are required before, during, and after treatment. The medication should only be used when the clinical benefits outweigh the risks of vision loss. Abrupt discontinuation should be avoided, and dosage adjustments must be made gradually under medical supervision.
