Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults to achieve glycemic control when diet and exercise are inadequate. May be used as monotherapy or as add-on therapy in combination with metformin, sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin when single-agent therapy is insufficient.

Vildagliptin inhibits the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), which normally breaks down incretin hormones. By preventing this breakdown, it increases levels of active GLP-1 and GIP, hormones that stimulate insulin release and suppress glucagon in a glucose-dependent manner, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.

Not indicated for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, heart failure, or history of pancreatitis. May cause side effects such as headache, dizziness, or gastrointestinal symptoms. Always follow prescribed dosing and dietary/exercise recommendations.
