Vimovo is used to treat the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is specifically designed for patients who are at risk for NSAID-associated gastric ulcers.
Naproxen works by blocking enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) that produce prostaglandins, substances involved in pain and inflammation. Esomeprazole reduces stomach acid production, which helps protect the stomach lining from the irritating effects of naproxen.
Vimovo may increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events, gastrointestinal bleeding, and should not be used in patients with active peptic ulcer disease. It may also interact with other medications including blood thinners, ACE inhibitors, and diuretics. Patients should use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration appropriate.
