Viramune is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents. It is used in adults and children of various ages.

Viramune is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that binds directly to reverse transcriptase, an enzyme essential for HIV replication. By binding to this enzyme, it blocks the conversion of viral RNA into DNA, preventing the virus from multiplying.

Viramune can cause serious liver toxicity and severe skin reactions, particularly during the first 18 weeks of therapy. Regular monitoring of liver function and clinical symptoms is required. It should only be initiated in patients with CD4 counts below 250 cells/mm³ in women or below 400 cells/mm³ in men due to increased risk of hepatotoxicity. Resistance can develop rapidly if used as monotherapy.
