Prevention of typhoid fever caused by Salmonella typhi. Recommended for travelers to endemic regions, healthcare workers, and individuals living in or working with populations at high risk for typhoid infection.
Vivotif contains live attenuated Salmonella typhi strain Ty21a. When taken orally, the vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies and cellular immunity against the typhoid bacteria without causing the disease itself.
Vivotif is contraindicated in immunocompromised individuals and should not be used during acute febrile illness. The vaccine may be less effective if taken with antibiotics or certain antimalarial medications. Complete the full course of doses at least 1-2 weeks before potential exposure. Common side effects include abdominal discomfort, nausea, and mild fever. This vaccine does not provide complete protection and basic hygiene precautions should still be followed.
