Vytorin is a prescription combination medication used to treat high cholesterol. Vytorin is used to treat primary hypercholesterolemia (high LDL cholesterol) and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. It is prescribed when diet and exercise alone have not adequately controlled cholesterol levels.
Vytorin combines two cholesterol-lowering agents: ezetimibe blocks cholesterol absorption in the small intestine, while simvastatin inhibits cholesterol production in the liver. Together, they provide dual action to reduce LDL cholesterol levels.
Vytorin should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Patients should avoid grapefruit juice as it can increase drug levels. Common side effects include muscle pain, headache, and joint pain. Patients should report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness to their healthcare provider immediately as rare but serious muscle problems can occur.
