Treatment of hereditary transthyretin-mediated (hATTR) amyloidosis in adults with polyneuropathy, a rare genetic condition that causes abnormal protein (amyloid) buildup in organs and tissues.
As an antisense oligonucleotide, Wainua works by binding to messenger RNA (mRNA) and reducing the liver's production of transthyretin (TTR) protein, thereby decreasing amyloid buildup in organs and tissues.
Administered via subcutaneous injection once monthly by a healthcare provider. Common side effects may include vitamin A deficiency and visual disturbances. Regular monitoring of liver function and neurological status may be required. Patients should not discontinue vitamin A supplementation without consulting their physician. Available only through a restricted distribution program.
