Wegovy is indicated for chronic weight management in adults with obesity (BMI of 30 or higher) or overweight (BMI of 27 or higher) with at least one weight-related comorbidity such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia. It is also approved for use in adolescents aged 12 years and older with obesity.

Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics the naturally occurring hormone glucagon-like peptide-1. It targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake, helping to reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness, leading to decreased calorie consumption.

Wegovy is not a lifestyle medication and should be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation. It should not be used in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or in those with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2.
