Winrho is primarily used to treat immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a bleeding disorder where the immune system destroys platelets. It is also used to prevent Rh immunization (Rh isoimmunization) in Rh-negative individuals who have been exposed to Rh-positive blood, such as during pregnancy with an Rh-positive fetus or after transfusion.

Winrho contains antibodies against the Rh(D) antigen on red blood cells. For ITP, the exact mechanism is not fully understood but is believed to involve antibody-coated red blood cells being cleared by the spleen, which reduces the overall immune destruction of platelets. For Rh prevention, the anti-D antibodies bind to Rh-positive red blood cells, preventing the recipient's immune system from mounting its own response against the Rh antigen.

Winrho is administered intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM) by healthcare professionals. It is specific to Rh-negative patients and is not effective in Rh-positive individuals. Patients should be screened for their Rh status and may require blood typing before administration. Common side effects may include headache, chills, fever, and hemolysis. Winrho should not be used in patients with known IgA deficiency or severe hypersensitivity to human immune globulin products.
