Wixela is indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma in patients 4 years of age and older, and for the maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema.
Wixela contains two active ingredients: fluticasone propionate, an inhaled corticosteroid that reduces airway inflammation, and salmeterol, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA) that relaxes smooth muscle in the airways to improve breathing.
Wixela is not for acute symptom relief and should not be used alone for asthma without an inhaled corticosteroid due to increased risk of asthma-related death. Patients should rinse mouth after use to prevent oral thrush. It should not be stopped abruptly without medical guidance.
