Xacduro is indicated for the treatment of hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (HABP) and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (VABP) caused by susceptible strains of Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus complex. It is specifically approved for use in adults when the infection is caused by bacteria that may not respond to other treatments.
Xacduro contains two active ingredients: sulbactam, which has intrinsic antibacterial activity against Acinetobacter species, and durlobactam, a novel beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects sulbactam from being broken down by bacterial resistance mechanisms. Together, they work synergistically to kill the bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis.
Xacduro is administered intravenously and should only be used when the infection is confirmed or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible Acinetobacter species. Due to the specific targeting of drug-resistant organisms, it is typically reserved for patients who have limited treatment options. As with all antibiotics, appropriate diagnostic testing and clinical judgment should guide its use.
