Xaciato is indicated for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis in non-pregnant women 18 years and older, helping to alleviate associated symptoms such as unusual vaginal discharge, odor, and discomfort.
Xaciato contains clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, preventing them from growing and multiplying, thereby reducing the overgrown harmful bacteria associated with bacterial vaginosis.
Xaciato is for vaginal use only and should not be taken orally. Patients should be aware of potential side effects including vaginal yeast infections, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. The medication may weaken latex condoms and diaphragms. Pregnant women should only use this medication if clearly needed, and patients with a history of clindamycin-associated colitis should inform their healthcare provider before use.
