Xatmep is indicated for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in pediatric patients, as well as for the symptomatic control of severe, recalcitrant, disabling psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis in adults who have not responded adequately to other treatments.
Methotrexate, the active ingredient in Xatmep, is an antifolate antimetabolite that inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, an enzyme essential for DNA synthesis and cell reproduction. This action affects rapidly dividing cells, including malignant cells and immune cells involved in inflammatory conditions.
Xatmep is a high-risk medication requiring close medical supervision due to potential for severe toxicities including bone marrow suppression, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and increased risk of infections. Regular monitoring of blood counts and organ function is essential. It should not be used during pregnancy due to teratogenic effects. Patients should not exceed prescribed dosing and should avoid alcohol during treatment.
