Xigduo is indicated for improving glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise. It is typically used when treatment with both dapagliflozin and metformin is appropriate, or when already taking these components separately.

Xigduo combines two mechanisms: dapagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor that helps the kidneys remove glucose from the body through urine by blocking glucose reabsorption, while metformin is a biguanide that reduces the liver's glucose production and improves the body's insulin sensitivity.

Xigduo is not indicated for use in type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Common side effects may include urinary tract infections, genital infections, and gastrointestinal symptoms. The medication may cause dehydration and hypotension, particularly when combined with diuretics. It should be discontinued prior to iodinated contrast imaging procedures and is not recommended for patients with severe kidney impairment. Lactic acidosis is a rare but serious risk associated with the metformin component.
