Xiidra is FDA-approved for the treatment of both signs and symptoms of dry eye disease in adults. Signs include corneal staining and other objective measures of eye surface damage, while symptoms include dryness, burning, stinging, irritation, and discomfort.

Xiidra contains the active ingredient lifitegrast, which is an integrin receptor antagonist. It works by blocking LFA-1 (lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1), a protein on the surface of inflammatory cells that normally allows them to adhere to other cells and tissues. By blocking this interaction, Xiidra prevents inflammatory cells from reaching the eye surface, reducing inflammation and associated damage.

Xiidra is applied as one drop in each eye twice daily. Common side effects may include eye irritation, discomfort, blurred vision, and unusual taste sensation. Patients should remove contact lenses before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. Patients should inform their doctor about all medications and allergies before starting treatment. The safety and effectiveness in children has not been established.
