Xultophy is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults to improve glycemic control alongside diet and exercise when other oral antidiabetic medications have not provided sufficient control.
Xultophy combines two mechanisms: insulin degludec provides a long-acting basal insulin that helps cells absorb glucose from the bloodstream, while liraglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that enhances insulin secretion in response to meals, reduces glucagon release, and promotes feelings of fullness.
Xultophy should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. It carries a risk of hypoglycemia, especially when combined with other insulin secretagogues. Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, headache, and injection site reactions. Patients should be monitored for pancreatitis and thyroid tumors, as liraglutide has been associated with these conditions in rare cases.
