Zelnorm is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) and chronic idiopathic constipation, primarily in women under 65 years of age when other treatments have not been adequate.
Zelnorm works as a serotonin-5-HT4 receptor agonist, stimulating gastrointestinal motility, increasing intestinal secretions, and accelerating gastric emptying to relieve constipation symptoms.
Due to cardiovascular safety concerns (increased risk of heart attack and stroke), Zelnorm is only available through a restricted access program and is contraindicated in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attack. It should be discontinued immediately if patients develop symptoms of angina or severe abdominal pain.
