Zilxi is FDA-approved for treating inflammatory lesions (papules and pustules) of papulopustular rosacea in adults. It is not indicated for other types of rosacea (such as erythematotelangiectatic rosacea) or for acne vulgaris.

Minocycline, the active ingredient in Zilxi, is a tetracycline antibiotic that has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. When applied topically, it reduces the bacterial load and modulates inflammatory responses in the skin that contribute to rosacea lesions. Being a foam formulation allows for even distribution across the skin surface.

Zilxi is for topical use only and should not be ingested or applied to mucous membranes, eyes, or open wounds. Common side effects may include application site reactions such as redness, dryness, or itching. As with other tetracycline antibiotics, there is a potential for antibiotic resistance with prolonged use. Patients with known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines should not use this medication. Safety in pregnancy, lactation, and children under 18 has not been established.
