Zostrix is indicated for the relief of neuropathic pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia (shingles), diabetic neuropathy, and musculoskeletal pain from conditions like osteoarthritis. It may also be used for other forms of chronic pain as directed by a healthcare provider.
The active ingredient capsaicin works by depleting substance P from sensory nerve endings in the skin. Substance P is a neurotransmitter involved in transmitting pain signals to the brain. With reduced substance P levels, the nerves become less capable of sending pain signals, providing relief from discomfort at the application site.
Zostrix may cause a burning, stinging, or warming sensation upon application, which typically diminishes with regular use. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and broken or irritated skin. Wash hands thoroughly after application unless treating hand pain. Do not apply heat or bandages to treated areas as this may increase absorption and cause excessive irritation. Consult a healthcare provider if pain persists or worsens.
