Zyclara is FDA-approved for treating actinic keratosis on the face and scalp in immunocompetent adults, external genital and perianal warts (condyloma acuminata), and superficial basal cell carcinoma when surgery is not appropriate.
Imiquimod, the active ingredient, is an immune response modifier that stimulates local immune cells (primarily macrophages and dendritic cells) to produce interferon-alpha and other cytokines. This enhanced immune response helps the body recognize and eliminate abnormal or infected cells.
Zyclara is applied topically to affected skin areas as directed (typically before bedtime, 2-3 times per week for several weeks). Common side effects include local skin reactions such as redness, swelling, burning, and flaking. Avoid contact with eyes, lips, and nostrils. Do not use on open wounds or broken skin. Patients should wash hands thoroughly after application. May weaken latex condoms and diaphragms.
