Abiraterone
Zytiga (abiraterone acetate) is a prescription medication used to treat metastatic prostate cancer. It works by inhibiting an enzyme called CYP17, which is involved in the production of androgens (male hormones) that can fuel prostate cancer growth. The medication is typically prescribed alongside prednisone to manage side effects and is used when prostate cancer has progressed despite androgen deprivation therapy.
Zytiga is an androgen biosynthesis inhibitor used to treat metastatic prostate cancer by reducing androgen production.

Zytiga is indicated for the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) and metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC). It is used in patients whose cancer has progressed despite androgen deprivation therapy (chemical or surgical castration).
Zytiga contains abiraterone acetate, which is converted in the body to abiraterone. Abiraterone inhibits the CYP17 enzyme, blocking the production of androgens (testosterone and other male hormones) in the testes, adrenal glands, and prostate tumor tissue. This reduces the androgens available to fuel cancer growth.
Zytiga is contraindicated in pregnant women due to potential harm to the fetus. Common side effects include fatigue, joint pain, high blood pressure, and low potassium levels. Liver function should be monitored during treatment. The medication must be taken on an empty stomach, and patients typically receive it alongside prednisone to reduce the risk of certain side effects.
