My Journey with Lupus: Learning to Listen to My Body
Jennifer shares her path from unexplained fatigue and joint pain to a lupus diagnosis and finding balance through treatment and self-care.
When Everything Felt Off
In my early thirties, I started waking up exhausted no matter how much I slept. My joints ached, especially my hands and knees, and a strange rash would appear across my cheeks after even a short walk in the sun. I brushed it off as stress from work and new motherhood, but the fatigue grew heavier and the pain more constant.
I saw my primary doctor several times. Bloodwork came back mostly normal at first, and I was told it could be fibromyalgia or just the demands of life. Still, deep down I knew something more was going on. My fingers would swell, and some days I could barely open a jar.
Searching for Answers
After months of pushing, I was referred to a rheumatologist. More tests followed—ANA, anti-dsDNA, complement levels. Waiting for results felt endless. I researched online late at night, scared of what I might find, yet desperate for a name for what was happening to me.
When the doctor said the words 'systemic lupus erythematosus,' I felt a mix of fear and strange relief. Finally, it wasn't all in my head.
Starting Treatment and Adjusting
I began hydroxychloroquine and a short course of low-dose steroids. The steroids helped the inflammation quickly, but I worried about long-term effects. My rheumatologist was patient, explaining that lupus is different for everyone and that we would adjust as needed. I also started wearing sunscreen religiously, resting when my body demanded it, and learning to pace myself.
There were hard days—flares that left me in bed, frustration when plans had to change, and the emotional weight of a chronic illness. I joined a support group and began talking openly with my family. Slowly, the right combination of medication, gentle movement, and better sleep hygiene helped me regain some control.
Living Well with Lupus Today
Years later, I still have lupus, but it no longer defines every moment. I work with my care team, track my symptoms, and celebrate the good days. I've learned to advocate for myself, protect my energy, and find joy in small routines. Life looks different than I once imagined, yet it is full of meaning and possibility.
